I’m a lip balm addict and I can’t remember the last time I went a day without using one. I just find that my lips need extra moisture throughout the day and depending on the weather, the food and the drinks I have, I usually need to reapply it a couple of times a day. But sometimes lip balm doesn’t do the trick when my lips are extremely chapped, so when I started using a lip mask, it took my addiction to another level. Although I only use them at night, it has made such a huge difference in how my lips feel as well as how healthy they look the next morning. It is definitely the next level up from a lip balm.
I heard a blogger praise the La Neige Lip Sleeping Mask a few years ago and I thought I’d give it a try and believe me, it’s worth all the hype. I also wrote a full blog post review on the La Neige Lip Sleeping Mask versus the La Neige Lip Treatment Balm, but if you haven’t read it yet, I will share the information on the La Neige Lip Sleeping Mask below. But as my usual curious self, I wanted to know if there was another lip mask out there that was the same or even better and I found the Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask and proceeded to test it. Read below for details on each of these lip masks, how they compare to each other, and my final verdict on the winner!
La Neige Lip Sleeping Mask
The La Neige Lip Sleeping Mask launched exclusively in Sephora in 2017 and currently carries 6 flavors. On the La Neige website, it has 8 if you’d like more choices – Mint Choco and Lemon Sorbe are the additional flavors. First of all, I have to say these scents are absolutely delicious and smells so edible! It really is such a treat to use this before I go to bed. My favorite flavor from them is Gummy Bear and it smells exactly how the Japanese grape soda (Sangaria Ramu) tastes.
What It Is
This leave-on lip mask deeply hydrates and provides smoother, more moisturized lips. It helps condition your lips overnight so you can wake up without chapped lips. It comes in a 20g jar.
How To Use
It comes with a mini silicone spatula which allows you to use the lip treatment more hygienically. Of course, if you rather, you can use your fingers to apply it. Either way, you’ll need to make sure the spatula (or your fingers) are clean every time before and after use to not cross-contaminate your products! Once applied, you just leave this on overnight (that’s why I apply it before I go to sleep) and the next morning it’s already absorbed into your lips. If there’s any residual lip mask, you can just wipe it off or use water to wash it off. When I wash my face in the morning, I naturally wash my lips too so it makes it easier. Also, by the time I wake up, my lips have already absorbed it all. I guess I really need the lip treatment!
Texture
It doesn’t feel too heavy to me, but it coats the lips well. It feels kind of like a creamy balm but it’s not sticky which is a definite plus.
Key Ingredients
They have a Moisture Wrap technology that has hyaluronic acid for moisture and hydration as well as minerals that helps lock in the moisture.
Benefits
This lip mask fixes dry lips and the lip area, especially if you wear a lot of lip makeup. It also melts out dead skin cells from the lips overnight. The ability to address fine lines on the lips are a plus! Sometimes, the corners of my lips are so dry that it cracks and it gets quite painful, especially in the winter. Using this Lip Sleeping Mask once immediately fixed the problem overnight! Of course, I need to hydrate by drinking more water too.

Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask
Tatcha is one of my favorite skincare brands and I love their effectiveness and luxuriousness. This Japanese-inspired skincare brand is focused on balancing skincare and wellness. I also did a review on their Rice Wash Cleanser and Dewy Skin Cream if you want more information on the brand one a couple of their most popular products. But today, we are going to review their Kissu Lip Mask.
What It Is
The Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask comes in the Original color and the Limited Edition Plum Blossom color currently and it is a soothing, non-sticky jelly lip mask that softens, smooths, and restores for visibly plump lips. Mask treatments that are made with fresh fruits and botanicals are much-loved in Japan for generations, which inspired the Kissu Lip Mask.
How To Use
Like the La Neige Lip Sleeping Mask, the Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask is also used best at night time. Apply a generous, even layer onto your clean, dry lips with their provided spatula and you will see the best results after a week’s time.
Texture
The Kissu Lip Mask is a jelly texture, but it isn’t as jelly as you may think – it doesn’t shake or anything, it’s more like a softer gel texture. However, when applied on the lips, it feels heavier than expected and it does feel a bit sticky.
Key Ingredients
Japanese Peach Extract – helps repair damaged lips, revitalize, and calm irritation
Three Rose Extract – protects the lips from dryness and visibly smoothens for healthier lips
Japanese Camellia Oil (Tsubaki) – seals in moisture and nurtures with Vitamins A, B, D, and E as well as nourishing omegas of 3, 6, and 9 – this featherweight botanical oil is richer in oleic acid than olive oil
Benefits
This lip mask helps with dryness, fine lines and wrinkles on the lips, hydration, and plumping. I do find it quite hydrating, but it is like I said above, a bit sticky and it doesn’t moisturize my lips as much as the La Neige Lip Sleeping Mask does the next morning – it has disappeared completely and sometimes I still the lack of hydration. However, when the corner of my lips start to crack, I found that it helped prevent it from getting worse.

9 g – $28 USD/$36 CAD
Where To Purchase
You can purchase this on the Tatcha website or Sephora.
Verdict Of The Two Lip Masks
When looking at the two lip masks and comparing their effectiveness and texture, the La Neige Lip Sleeping Mask easily wins for me. It’s easy to apply, it smells delicious, it’s not sticky, and you clearly see the effects the next morning. Not to say that the Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask doesn’t work, but it just isn’t as effective for my needs and I highly prefer not having a sticky lip product – that’s also why I always avoid using lip glosses. It’s also great that La Neige offers multiple flavors to choose from plus limited editions that always come out.
Although both have proprietary ingredients, the Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask feels a little more luxurious because of the packaging, but it may work better for those who don’t have as dry lips and don’t want the feeling of something heavy on the lips especially when sleeping. There is also a $4 USD price difference between the two, with Tatcha more expensive with less than half the product.
After using both thoroughly, my preference is still the La Neige lip mask and I will always repurchase it! I am glad I gave the Tatcha lip mask a try as I love the brand and love trying new products to review for you and it’s always good to know for future reference what I should repurchase or pass on.
