Sometimes it is hard to take care of your skin while you’re on the go as you travel. It’s not always easy to follow your skincare routine, or bring all the beauty products you need when traveling. The stress of flying and traveling and changing your diet can affect your body and how your skin reacts. But the number one thing you can do to take of your skin without doing too much or going out of your way is to stay hydrated. Here are 8 ways to stay hydrated to maintain your great skin even while you’re traveling.
1. Bring A Water Bottle
Yes, it may be inconvenient or heavy but it’s great to be prepared with a refillable water bottle that you can use on your trip. And the more active you are, the more you’ll need to stay hydrated. I’ve been in situations where I forgot to bring water with me and there was nowhere to buy water and let me tell you, it’s been tough. Especially in the scorching heat. It also saves you money on having to buy water everywhere you go – it adds up!
2. Buy A Large Jug Of Water For Your Hotel Room
I usually buy a few litres of water at a convenience or grocery store nearby. Depending on how long I stay at the particular accommodations, I’ll usually have at least 1 or 2 jugs of water. That way I can refill my water bottle, and drink as much water as I want to while I’m there without having to constantly buy water bottles when I run out. This little trick has saved me lots of money!
3. Avoid Dehydrating Foods And Drinks
Dehydrating drinks can include sugary drinks, coffee, tea, and alcohol. Dehydrating foods can include sodium-filled and fried foods, fibre, sugary treats, and protein. Both salt and sugar sends signals to your brain that you’re thirsty.
4. Eat Your Water
Sometimes it can be hard to consistently remember to drink water throughout the day. I know I’m guilty of that. But eating fruits or drinking fresh fruit juice can help hydrate you in a more enjoyable way. Fruits that hold a lot of water help you stay hydrated and help with your skin health too. This includes cucumber, tomatoes, apple, peaches, oranges, pineapple, blueberries, and more. A majority of these fruits listed have over 80% water in them. Melons contain more than 90% of water in them.
5. Drink Electrolyte-Rich Drinks
This can be coconut water, sports drinks like Gatorade, Pedialyte and fruit juices as well. Electrolytes keep your body hydrated inside and out through its minerals that direct water to the parts of your body that needs it most. Our body also naturally helps us with this through sweating. This is especially useful when you drink it before a vigorous activity or a workout. Minerals like sodium, calcium and magnesium are electrolytes you can also get it through the food you eat. But if you want a little boost, these type of drinks will greatly help your hydration levels.
6. Avoid The Heat
We often go on vacation just to bask in the sun and take in all the rays we can get. Getting a shade or two darker and coming home with a sun-kissed glow is also compelling evidence for a great vacation abroad. But as much as we loving doing that, too much sun can highly dehydrate you. I know after too much sun and heat at the beach, I either pass out right on the sand with the sound of the ocean in the background (my favorite type of nap) or get completely exhausted by the time I’m home and need to take a nap. Avoiding the heat will help you avoid dehydration and not have you double the efforts of upping your water intake even more.
7. Use A Hydrating Face Mist
You can find the hydrating face mist I currently use in What’s In My Travel Makeup Bag blog post. There are lots of different brands out there including Avéne Thermal Spring Water Spray and Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist. These face mists are packed with minerals and antioxidants and can also help you set your makeup and refresh your face. Face mists help you re-hydrate throughout the day and give you an extra vacation glow. Especially when the weather is extra hot out, it really helps cool you down and provide you with a boost of hydration.
8. Moisturize Your Skin
It’s important to stay hydrated through drinking our required amount of H2O, but using a moisturizer to help speed up the process and give your skin some external hydration is a must. I use both hand creams and body lotions. Our hands have it the roughest since we’re constantly using them. My favorite hand cream that greatly helps with dry or cracked hands is the La Roche Posay Cicaplast Mains which I share with you in What’s In My Everyday Makeup Bag blog post. My husband also has rough hands from Jiu Jitsu/Judo and working out so much and after three uses of this, almost all his calluses and cracks are gone. This is especially useful in the dry winter months. To maintain my body’s moisture or to rehydrate after a shower, I like to use Hempz Herbal Body Moisturizer. I’ve used this since my Beauty Supply Outlet days (you can read more about my beauty experience in My Skincare Journey Part 2) and have been using it ever since. I love the soft scent and the hemp seed oil helps protect and lock in moisture for my skin. It has vitamins and antioxidants in it to further benefit the body. Hempz body moisturizers also come in many different scents, and some are limited edition which are super fun to get.
Staying hydrated while traveling is important to keep you and your skin energized and healthy. Hydrating internally and externally will help you take care of yourself and increase your physical wellbeing, especially when you’re traveling abroad. Give your body what it needs and it will help you as well. We all want to come back home relaxed and rejuvenated and an easy way to do so is to stay hydrated!
