Now that I’ve exhausted most of the exciting road trips I can take in Toronto and the surrounding areas, I’ve decided to venture further to explore our neighbors in New York State – and this time, Lake Placid, for a long weekend getaway. Lake Placid is located in New York State’s Adirondack Mountains and was made famous for having hosted the Winter Olympics twice. But that’s not all there is – it’s the perfect place for relaxation and adventure and makes for a great long weekend getaway. Lake Placid is also known for its scenic beauty (especially during your drive there), its rich history, charming local vibes, local culinary gems, and mountain landscapes. Its proximity to Toronto and Quebec which it borders, makes it an ideal destination for a quick escape from city life.

When To Visit Lake Placid, New York

Lake Placid - The Adirondacks

We visited Lake Placid during Canada’s Victoria Day holiday weekend for my birthday trip in May. The spring weather was perfect – comfortable enough for either long sleeves or shorts throughout the day and slightly cooler at night but still warm enough to forgo a jacket. Spring is also the slow season with fewer crowds which I appreciate and you feel more of the small-town vibe this way too. However, there were a lot of black flies during this time and it may be something to consider if you plan on hiking because boy are they a nuisance! There will also be some wet and muddy spots during your hike, so wear your hiking shoes to be well-prepared! Here are the Types Of Shoes To Bring On Vacation to help you out.

The best time to visit Lake Placid, New York depends on what activities you’re interested in. The Adirondacks is a great destination to visit year-round as from Spring through Fall, it is great for hiking, biking, kayaking, and more. In the Winter, Lake Placid is renowned for its winter sports so you can go skiing, snowboarding, bobsledding, ice skating, and more.

How To Get To Lake Placid, New York And How To Get Around

Road trip to Lake Placid, New York

Driving

I’ve taken many long drives for my road trips, so the journey from Toronto to Lake Placid, New York doesn’t bother me. I actually quite like the fact that I can pack as much as I want, be comfortable in my own car, and go according to my own schedule. The drive takes about 5.5 hours, but you may also want to factor in traffic on Highway 401.

Quebec, which borders New York State to the north, provides an incredibly convenient drive into Lake Placid. Don’t be surprised if you hear a lot of French being spoken in the area – many visitors come from these French-speaking neighbors!

Flying

If you’re planning to fly into Lake Placid, you’ll want to land at the Plattsburgh International Airport (PBG) and then drive to Lake Placid which is approximately 1.5 hours. This leads me to say that you’ll want to rent a car for the duration of your trip as you will need a vehicle to get around to different places, especially for hikes and other activities or for sightseeing as locations you’ll want to visit are not close to each other and there are no buses or shuttles that you can take.

Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex

Things To Know – As mentioned a few times already, it is a huge feat for Lake Placid to have hosted the Winter Olympics twice! Here you can visit the ski jumping complex with its 90 and 120-meter ski jumps and ice rinks and even have the chance to watch practices happening during the winter months for Olympic athletes and international competitions. During your drive in Lake Placid, you’ll be sure to pass this at least once and see the towering ski jump from afar. You can actually take an elevator and ascend 42 stories to the 120-meter jump-off and have a great view of the Adirondack Mountains from the top. If you’re brave, you can try the Sky Flyer Zipline that mimics the feeling of ski jumping or you can take a relaxing gondola ride instead.

John Brown Farm State Historic Site

Time Spent – 1 hour
Things To Know – Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Lake Placid lies the John Brown Farm State Historic Site, a testament to the unwavering commitment of abolitionist John Brown. This historic site serves as his former home and final resting place and is a great reminder of the resilience he had in the ongoing struggle for equality and the emancipation of slaves.

Mount Jo Trail
Time Spent – 1.5 hours
Things To Know – The trail is about 2 kilometers and is the shortest route up the highest mountain in Lake Placid. This is another great option for a short hike and promising views of the High Peaks with less effort than some other hikes. There was a love story here where a man from New York fell in love with a woman from Toronto while camping at Ausable Lake and as they hiked Mount Marcy together, they were already talking about building their dream house in Lake Placid by the time they reached the summit. The man named the heart-shaped lake below, Heart Lake, and named the nearby mountain Mount Jo after the Canadian woman.

Cascade Mountain Trailhead (More challenging hiking option 3 of 3)

Dana at Cascade Mountain Summit - On Top Of The World

Time Spent – 3 to 5 hours
Things To Know – Cascade Mountain is the 36th tallest mountain of the Adirondack High Peaks and has an open summit with a stunning view of the valleys and lakes below and surrounding mountains, including the ones in Vermont. The highlight of this hike is the summit so you absolutely must make it there! It is a steep and rocky hike with some muddy areas and took us 4 hours exactly roundtrip. I will also say that this is where I got bit the most from black flies, but to be honest, there were a lot of them everywhere we went in Lake Placid because of the time we visited. So don’t forget your bug spray, have long sleeves in case, and a hat.
