Even if you’re an avid traveler and vacation enthusiast, sometimes it’s just nice to be home and be able to embrace a homebody lifestyle when you’re not traveling so you can recharge, relax, and find joy in the comfort of your own space. Being a homebody is about finding contentment in the simple pleasures of your home and creating an environment that nurtures your well-being while you’re taking some time off traveling. Being at home can make you feel restless especially if you’re an adventurer at heart, but take advantage of your downtime and use these tips to embrace a homebody’s luxurious lifestyle in between trips.
1 – Create A Cozy Space
The first thing you want to do to enjoy being at home when you’re not traveling is to create a comfortable and cozy space for yourself. Here are a couple of ways:
- Invest in comfortable furniture, soft blankets, and plush pillows for the luxurious vibes you usually find in a hotel, but in your own home!
- Cultivate a cozy atmosphere with warm, dimmable lighting – it truly makes a difference to tailor the ambience of your home to suit various moods by adjusting the light settings and warmth, ensuring the perfect setting for any occasion.
- Harness the power of scent to evoke cherished travel memories in different hotels around the world such as utilizing candles, diffusers, or home sprays such as those from Hotel Collection. My favorite is Black Velvet which was inspired by The Edition Hotel in New York.
2 – Get Luxuriously Comfortable
In my blog post How To Live A More Luxurious Lifestyle, the third key point emphasized the significance of personal style. If you want to recreate the indulgent ambience reminiscent of luxurious hotels abroad, consider enhancing your everyday comfort through your wardrobe choices. Immerse yourself in the ultimate hotel experience at home when you’re not traveling by getting comfortable in:
- Luxurious Robes like the Renovation Hardware Luxury Plush Robe
- Matching Pajama Sets like the Cozy Earth Bamboo Pajama Set or the Skims Soft Lounge Sleep Set
- Matching Loungewear Sets
- Barefoot Dreams Cardigans
- Plush slippers like the Renovation Hardware Luxury Plush Slippers or Ugg Women’s Scuffette II
- Fuzzy socks
- Barefoot Dreams Throws/Blankets (or similar)
3 – Create A Relaxing Routine
Establishing a calming routine that helps you wind down at home and truly savor your downtime, providing a way to alleviate everyday stresses. This dedicated home routine serves as a distinct and rejuvenating counterpart to your exciting travel experiences. Including activities such as reading, taking aromatherapy baths, regular at-home facials, gym sessions and yoga classes, journaling, meditation or devotions, as well as creative pursuits can help contribute to a routine that’s just right for you when you’re not traveling.
4 – Enjoy Meals At Home
As much as I love going to different restaurants and trying new foods, sometimes it’s nice to take a break and enjoy meals at home. I’m not a huge fan of cooking, but I do love a healthy and tasty meal and it’s even more enjoyable when I get high-quality or specialty foods when I do my groceries. Maybe you love cooking or you may like it a little less like me, but these are some ways I make an effort to enjoy meals at home when I’m not traveling that may inspire a travel lover like you:
- Explore new recipes to add a different flavor or style of food to your dishes at home.
- Recreate dishes that you loved when you were traveling abroad – even if it may take a few tries or until you can figure out how to adjust the recipe to the way you like it.
- Get inspired by travel cooking shows for new dishes you can make at home or simply just enjoy watching them while you eat.
- Make meals an event by putting in extra effort for a lovely setting so it feels like you’re at a restaurant.
5 – Experiment With Your Home Décor
Being in an environment that makes you want to be there is a contributing factor to you even wanting to be at home. Being inside your four walls every day can get repetitive and even have you feeling a certain type of way. Enhancing your living space with thoughtful home décor and exploring your personal style can greatly enhance your enjoyment of being at home when you’re not traveling. Here’s how you can get started if you haven’t done so already:
- Travel is about change, and changing up your home décor seasonally to keep things fresh adds a bit of change you may be looking for at home.
- Rearrange your furniture or add new elements – this small action can really change your perspective when things fit better in your home.
- Infuse excitement and lasting memories into your personal space by using home décor inspired by your travel adventures such as souvenirs or photographs.
6 – Add Variety To Your Home Routine
Elevate your at-home experience when not traveling by adding variety into your routine to ensure there’s always something to look forward to. Consider introducing themed nights where you can immerse yourself in different cultural experiences or indulge in a movie marathon night after a long day of work with a bucket of popcorn. Additionally, carve out moments for weekly at-home spa night, creating a luxurious and rejuvenating atmosphere right in the comfort of your own space. These small efforts are simple yet delightful additions you can add to your routine at home.
7 – Explore Your Hobbies
As you settle back into the comforts of your home, appreciating the potential extra free time that accompanies a break from travel by rediscovering or developing hobbies that you enjoy can bring further joy, fulfillment, and even growth to your life. Whether you find comfort between the pages of a captivating book, express your creativity through writing, learning a new craft or getting better at a musical instrument, you can explore activities that continue to contribute to personal growth – but this time at home. This is also the time to invest in yourself with other interests outside of travel.
8 – Bring The Outdoors Inside
Whether you’re someone who thrives in a home office or are simply just a homebody who loves being at home when you’re not traveling, infusing a bit of the outdoors can be a transformative experience. Consider incorporating indoor plants like snake plants or palms, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their capacity to enhance air circulation and purify indoor air. Opt for plant varieties that transport you to tropical destinations, evoking the essence of vacation vibes within the confines of your home.
For a more practical touch, initiate an indoor herb garden which ensures you a fresh supply of herbs for your culinary adventures at home. You can also elevate your home décor with the addition of your favorite flowers that you can change up every couple of weeks for a refreshing ambience (if that’s something you don’t mind spending on or you can grow them yourself). By introducing elements of nature into your living space, you not only enhance the visual appeal but also contribute to a rejuvenating and harmonious atmosphere.
And if you prefer nature outdoors, that’s okay too! You can venture into creating a small garden or utilize your balcony space to nurture some of your favorite plants and herbs.
9 – Plan Staycation Activities
Even if international travel isn’t on the horizon, the joy of planning staycation activities can be an exciting way to venture out and rediscover your own city or nearby treasures. Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate the liberating charm of road trips where the constraints of airplane luggage are replaced with the freedom to bring however many items I need to travel with to be extra comfortable. It really is a journey filled with uncovering hidden gems right in my vicinity.
Consider exploring location attractions or embarking on a culinary adventure by trying out new restaurants with diverse cuisines. Personally, I’ve compiled a list of over 300 restaurants in my city that I’m gradually checking off. Staycations offer the perfect opportunity to be a tourist in your own backyard and still fulfill your wanderlust even at home.
10 – Host Get-Togethers With Friends And Family
Now that you’re home, this is the ideal opportunity to invest quality time in the company of friends and family. Consider hosting casual get-togethers (or formal if you want things a little fancier) at your place while creating an inviting atmosphere with homemade snacks, charcuterie boards, potluck options, and meaningful conversations. Add a classic board game or a cinematic experience to the mix with a new movie for extra entertainment. Whatever you plan, these low-key gatherings can foster meaningful connections and create lasting memories in the comfort of your home.
11 – Use The Time To Plan Your Next Travel Adventures
What better thing to do than spend your time at home planning for your next travel adventures when you’re not traveling? With this downtime, you have the luxury of dedicating ample time, energy, and attention to crafting the perfect itineraries for your next journeys. Take up as much room as you need to immerse yourself in researching destinations, exploring potential activities, booking that hotel you always wanted to stay at, using your travel points for free flights, and savoring the anticipation that comes with curating unforgettable travel experiences. This thoughtful planning process not only ensures a well-prepared adventure, but allows you to anticipate the prospect of future travels so you no longer have to only daydream about it!
One of my favorite things to do when I’m at home and not traveling is to plan multiple trips – whether they’re road trips or international trips, sometimes I create over 10 itineraries in one sitting. I think it’s just the thrill of knowing that it’s either possible to cross off my list for that year, or that I can have a random itinerary ready at hand when I need it. And it’s worked amazingly well for me so far!
12 – Practice Gratitude
For many, travel is a luxurious experience that doesn’t come around frequently. Regardless of individual circumstances, embarking on regular trips and vacations in different countries often requires intentional planning, financial considerations, and prioritizing time. Recognizing the value of travel and incorporating it into your life demands a mindful approach to spending, saving, and time management. Take moments when you’re at home and not traveling to express gratitude and reflect on the positive aspects of your life, as this mindfulness can contribute to a contented existence. Travel, when approached with intention, not only enriches your experiences but also becomes an integral part of a well-balanced and meaningful life!
